At Southern States Management Group, we take great pride in maintaining the beauty and health of our neighborhoods. A key part of this effort is caring for the trees that line our streets and enhance our landscapes. Healthy trees not only improve curb appeal but also provide shade, reduce storm damage, and contribute to a vibrant environment. Here are some essential tree care practices every homeowner should know.

Palm Tree Care: Avoid the “Hurricane Cut”

While it may seem tidy to remove most of a palm’s fronds, this so-called “hurricane cut” can actually harm the tree. Over-pruning robs palms of essential nutrients, increases storm damage risks, and can even create a “bottleneck” effect in the trunk. Instead:

  • Do prune carefully by removing only dead or dying fronds.

  • Don’t prune green fronds, as they feed new growth.

  • Remember: Mature fronds protect the younger ones.

Protecting Trees from Damage

One of the most common but preventable tree injuries comes from lawn equipment. A weed trimmer or mower striking a tree’s trunk can create wounds that lead to disease or even death. To prevent this:

  • Apply mulch around the tree base to reduce the need for trimming near the trunk.

  • Use a plastic sleeve or guard around young trees.

  • Avoid piling mulch directly against the bark, as this can also cause rot.

The Art of Proper Pruning

Pruning isn’t just about appearances—it’s essential to a tree’s long-term health. Done correctly, pruning strengthens trees and reduces hazards during storms. Done incorrectly, it can shorten a tree’s life. Best practices include:

  • Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches.

  • Keep no more than 25% of the canopy removed at one time.

  • Maintain interior limbs to improve stability.

  • Avoid “topping” a tree, which weakens its structure and increases storm vulnerability.

The Value of Mulching

Mulch is one of the simplest and most effective tools for tree health—when applied properly. Benefits include moisture retention, soil temperature regulation, and protection from lawn equipment. Follow these tips:

  • Use organic mulch like wood chips or pine needles.

  • Apply a layer 2–4 inches deep, keeping it away from the trunk.

  • Avoid “mulch volcanoes”—large piles of mulch around the base—which can suffocate roots and attract pests.

Working Together for Healthy Landscapes

At Southern States Management Group, we are committed to helping our communities thrive, and that includes the landscapes we all share. By following these best practices for tree care, homeowners can ensure our neighborhoods remain safe, beautiful, and welcoming for years to come.
