‘HIS JOURNEY’: FORMER VOLUSIA AREA SUPERINTENDENT NEARS END OF APPALACHIAN TRAIL

Gary Marks left the area last April. Now, he’s on the precipice of fulfilling a lifelong dream.
This time last year, Gary Marks was one month into his final semester as an area superintendent for Volusia County schools.
For 35 years he and his wife, Darryl-Anne Marks — a teacher at Holly Hill Middle School — had the same routine. Out the door before sunrise, in school all afternoon, and back home in time for dinner and bed before doing it all again the next day.
On the weekends, they would occasionally sail their boat. In recent years they also took up running, including the 2012 Athens Marathon in Greece.
That was their lifestyle. But with Gary Marks, 58, set to retire at the beginning of this year, Darryl-Anne knew things were about to change.
“My husband is a very engaging man,” said Darryl-Anne, who is also 58. “He worked really hard for a long time, and he always wanted to do this. So, we said we were going to give it a shot.”
